Milano commemorates the Lampedusa massacre and the National Day in memory of the victims of immigration with an artistic installation at the Darsena. The installation consists of an overturned boat with a white inscription on a blue background that reads: “Lampedusa Massacre October 3, 2013. Municipality 6 commemorates the 368 victims.”

The boat is surrounded by 368 chrysanthemums, one for each victim of the shipwreck, and numerous arms of adults and children reaching desperately towards the sky. The artwork was produced and created by the company Kineticvibe with the contribution of artist Emiliano Rubinacci, art director Beppe Treccia Iavicoli, designer Matteo Rossi, and the contribution of Giuseppe Gep Caserta.

“The arms emerging from the water – wrote Santo Minniti, president of Municipality 6, on Facebook – convey a raw but true message. It’s a scene that we sadly have become accustomed to seeing in the images that come from the Mediterranean, and it conveys a duty to us: to lend a helping hand. Because the arms emerging from the water are people fighting for their lives, men, women, and children who indifference and ideological measures against sea rescues risk turning into lifeless bodies, filling the enormous cemetery that the Mediterranean Sea has become.”
