Marine Le Pen, leader of the French nationalist party Rassemblement National, addressed supporters of the Italian political party Lega at the annual festival in Pontida. She expressed solidarity between the two movements, stating that they are engaged in the same fight for freedom and their respective countries. Matteo Salvini, Italy’s Minister of Infrastructure, introduced Le Pen as an ally and friend, emphasizing the historical connection between Lega and Rassemblement National. Le Pen then spoke about the need to defend the rights of nations and peoples within the European Union, criticizing the imposition of rules that go against national interests. She specifically highlighted the absurdity of banning traditional engines, restricting agriculture, and limiting livestock breeding. Le Pen accused the EU of suppressing freedom of thought and production. The crowd, estimated to be around 100,000, enthusiastically supported Le Pen’s speech, particularly when she advocated for the protection of landscapes against the construction of wind turbines and the defense of ports. Le Pen praised Salvini for his courageous defense of Italian ports when he was in power, calling on him to maintain that stance. She reiterated her admiration for the Lega and expressed hope for a future alliance between their parties in the upcoming European elections. Salvini echoed this sentiment, declaring his preference for Le Pen over French President Macron. He emphasized the unity of purpose between Lega and Rassemblement National, stating that even though they have different cultures, they are determined to win together.
