Isabella Rossellini, 71-year-old actress, director, model, and ethologist, is the protagonist of the new issue of Vogue Italy, available from October 3rd. The icon, who appears once again on the cover of the magazine, was photographed by the young Malaysian photographer Zhong Lin for a photo shoot that spans between reality and surrealism. As already stated, this is not the first time the actress poses for Vogue; in fact, she has been featured on 38 covers, representing the evolution of the concept of beauty throughout the years: “Thank you for allowing me to have wrinkles”.

In the October issue of Vogue, Isabella Rossellini, in addition to being the main face, has been interviewed by Gianluca Farinelli, President of the Cinema Foundation for Rome. She first talked about her love for cinema: “The first time I fell in love with cinema was while watching Disney’s ‘101 Dalmatians’. I was nine years old and I already adored animals. I watched it twice in a row, one show after another. I was enchanted, perhaps because I was experiencing the joy that cinema gives us, the joy of entering another world”. Furthermore, her importance in the industry will lead her to receive a career achievement award at the Rome Film Festival. During the festival, she will also present her latest film, “La chimera”, which will be released on November 23rd. In Rome, Rossellini will also be a guest at Forces of Fashion: Vogue’s global event that will take place on October 21st and will showcase the world of fashion.

In her interview, the actress also remembered her mother, the successful Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman: “I remember the first time I had a shock: it happened while watching Victor Fleming’s ‘Joan of Arc’. She was the protagonist, she was hit by an arrow and then burned… When we saw the scene of the bonfire, us children burst into tears. They had to take us out of the cinema. Mother, who was not with us, had to rush home and show that she was alive. I still remember the terror I felt in that theater”. She then talked about how her mother was a great example for her: “Her era was still a time when it was believed that women were naturally inclined to stay at home and take care of children and husbands. But with my mother’s example and the explosive feminism of the 70s in Italy, I quickly made the decision to be an independent woman. That’s why I was already earning a living at 22: independence is first and foremost a financial matter”.

Her career as a model began with Vogue Italy when she was asked to pose for her first shoot: “I entered the world of fashion through the main door”. Among the artists she worked with, she mentioned Richard Avedon: “Once he told me, ‘The model is like a silent film actress. She doesn’t have dialogue, but she has to express emotions. I photograph emotions, not your beautiful nose! Know that there is no beauty without emotions’. That’s how I understood the profession of a model. Then he encouraged me to become an actress. ‘You are already a silent film actress. Now you just have to add words!'”. Once her modeling experience ended, Isabella decided to enroll in university and graduated in ethology. Today, she is a successful director of films that star animals.

Come prima cosa ha parlato del suo amore per il cinema: “La prima volta che mi sono innamorata del cinema è stato per ‘La carica dei 101′ di Disney. Avevo nove anni e già allora adoravo gli animali. L’ho visto due volte di seguito, uno spettacolo dietro l’altro. Ero incantata, forse perché stavo sperimentando l’emozione che ci dà il cinema e cioè quella di entrare in un altro mondo”. Inoltre, la sua importanza nel settore la porterà alla Festa del Cinema di Roma a ricevere il premio alla carriera. Durante il Festival, inoltre, presenterà il suo ultimo film La chimera, in uscita il 23 novembre. A Roma Rossellini sarà anche tra gli ospiti di Forces of Fashion: l’evento globale di Vogue che si terrà il 21 ottobre e che racconterà il mondo della moda.

Nel raccontarsi l’attrice ha ricordato anche sua madre, l’attrice svedese di grande successo Ingrid Bergman:“Ricordo la prima volta che mi è preso un colpo: è successo con Giovanna d’Arco di Victor Fleming. Lei era la protagonista, veniva colpita da una freccia e poi bruciata…Quando abbiamo visto la scena del rogo noi bambini siamo scoppiati a piangere. Ci hanno portati via dal cinema. Mamma, che non era con noi, è dovuta correre a casa e mostrare che era viva. Ancora ricordo il terrore che ho provato in quella sala”. Poi ha raccontato di come sua madre fu un grande esempio per lei: “La sua era ancora un’epoca in cui si riteneva che le donne fossero naturalmente portate a rimanere in casa ad accudire figli e marito. Ma con l’esempio di mamma e gli anni ’70, periodo esplosivo del femminismo in Italia, ho preso ben presto la decisione di essere una donna indipendente. Per questo già a 22 anni mi guadagnavo da vivere: l’indipendenza è prima di tutto una questione finanziaria”.
Isabella Rossellini attrice: iniziò tutto con Vogue Italia
La sua carriera come modella ebbe inizio proprio con Vogue Italia quando le venne chiesto di posare per il suo primo servizio: “Sono entrata nel mondo della moda dalla porta principale”. Tra gli artisti con cui ha collaborato, ha ricordato Richard Avedon: “Una volta mi disse ‘La modella è come un’attrice del muto. Non ha a disposizione un dialogo, ma deve esprimere emozioni. Io fotografo le emozioni, non il tuo bel naso! Sappi che non esiste bellezza senza emozioni’. È così che ho capito il mestiere di modella. Poi mi ha incoraggiato a diventare attrice. ‘Sei già attrice del muto. Ora devi solo aggiungere la parola!’”. Una volta però conclusasi la sua esperienza come modella, Isabella ha deciso di iscriversi all’università dove si è laureata in etologia e ad oggi è una regista di successo di film che hanno come protagonisti gli animali.
